A downloadable game for Windows

Humanity has hidden underground for generations.  Its few scattered communities are losing their connections to each other, losing their ability to cooperate.  Fortunately, you haven't given up hope.  You've heard stories of a better world above, and you mean to find it.

The Fabled Sun is a small metroidvania drawing inspiration from classic NES titles like Metroid, Legacy of the Wizard, and Blaster Master.  Explore the sprawling caverns of this underground world and discover strange flora and fauna.  Visit towns and hear what people have to say.  Find helpful items and the keys that will open the path to the surface.

Controls include Gamepad support and keyboard.  Controls can be changed in the game menu.

Default keybindings are:

movement: WASD for movement

Jump: spacebar

Talk/Attack: J (attack requires a weapon)

This game sure could use a god damn map!

Like I just found the swim mask by some super weird path,
went diving along some convoluted path, sadly hadnt found any savespot set and died.

well, swim mask lost and I havent the slightest idea where the f uck it was or any motivation to search for it again.

even with a map, this game would already be hard, let alone without a map!

I aint playing for some while cause that sure got me pissed :-(

A map would certainly improve the game.  This is the first game we ever made, so basically every aspect of it was a challenge for us, so a map was one of the things we ended up cutting from the scope.  I tried to make the world as navigable as possible without one by making rooms unique and giving them names and coordinates (see the 'L6' etc in the top-right).  I'll take a look at making a map though.  We might be able to add one in an updated build.

You could use my map to start with. However, it is not complete. I started "drawing" only after I had already played for some time. But for a rough orientation it could be helpful.

Just right click on the image and save.

Cool! I am fiddling around with making an in-game map that will fill out as you explore, but in the meantime those who don't mind a bit of spoiler can use Ansgar's work here.

hey thanks for the map!
Do you happen to remember how to get out of the mole village at the bottom right`?
I am missing both double jump and pickaxe, so I dont see how to get out of there.
there is these destructible blocks in my way everywhere :-/

I can tell you you won't be able to get too far past moletown without the pickaxe.  There shouldn't be anything stopping you from hunting it down though.

oh okay, guess then I'll have another look.
felt like I was running in loops in that area down there with the only exits blocked by rocks.
and cant get back up the way I initially arrived there sicne I would need dobule jump for that too

I'm looking through the rooms now, trying to determine if I accidentally made a trap that you got stuck in.  Can you tell me what path took you to moletown?  I didn't think it would be possible without either the double jump (through the water zone) or the pick (through the mechanical zone).  I must have missed some clever way past one of those.

e: It was that teleport door wasn't it?  Nuts, talk about an oversight.  I'm going to try to get a fix released for this.

Does anyone have a tip for me where I can find the right accessories for diving? I am missing at the moment only the blue key and that for diving.

Otherwise.... Excellent game. Makes a lot of fun!

Thank you so much!  Getting the blue key will require the Dive Contrivance.  Without spoiling it right out of the gate, I can say one of the npcs in the Water Town might have a clue.  That would be a good place to start your search.

Thanks for the tip. It is quite well hidden. How many candles are there actually to find? Am I still missing some (see picture)?

Looks like you're just missing 2.  There are 16 at max.  I really appreciate you digging into this game and trying to get 100%!

Hello, other dev here... Thank you so much for the kind words, it really means a lot to us!

We now have a video showing the intro cinematic, and there's this gameplay vid:
